Jonathan Bonnitcha

Senior Associate

Jonathan Bonnitcha is a Senior Associate with IISD’s Economic Law and Policy Program who is based in Sydney, Australia. He is also a Senior Lecturer at the Law Faculty of the University of New South Wales.

Jonathan works on international economic governance, with a particular focus on investment treaties. He has several years of practical experience as a lawyer in investment treaty arbitrations, including as a member of the legal team that successfully defended Australia’s tobacco plain packaging laws against a multi-billion dollar claim. He has advised the governments of both developed and developing countries on investment treaty policy.

Jonathan contributes to IISD’s provision of advisory services to developing countries on questions of investment governance. He is also involved in several of IISD's ongoing research projects. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles and books on investment treaties, including as the co-author of The Political Economy of the Investment Treaty Regime, published by Oxford University Press in 2017.

Jonathan obtained a doctorate, master, and bachelor of law from the University of Oxford, and obtained a bachelor's degree in law and economics from the University of Sydney. He is qualified to practice law in Australia.
