This "Survival Guide" is a manual to assist the South in general, and Southern negotiators in particular, in dealing with the climate change negotiations. It is intended to assist developing country negotiators navigate their way through the negotiating rules, the UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol. It contains negotiating tips and tricks for delegates who are often negotiating on their own against large, powerful delegations. The survival guide is available in English, Français and Español as a PDF file and also in hard copy. It is also available in English as an online module. Achieving a robust and equitable climate treaty requires a negotiation process in which all parties have confidence and participate as equals. But fewer resources, smaller delegations and limited access to information frequently hinder a level playing field for developing countries at the climate change negotiating table. Capacity building for negotiators responds to the expressed needs of developing country negotiators involved in the climate change negotiations. Many developing country negotiators are experts in meteorology, environmental science and policy-making. Without a great deal of back-up or formal training in negotiation theory and practice, they must learn negotiating skills as they go along.
The CCKN seeks to build capacity of developing country negotiators to provide them with the tools and skills to participate effectively alongside larger negotiating teams and contribute to an equitable negotiating process. The CCKN has implemented the following capacity building projects for negotiators:
Climate Change Capacity Project-Africa
CCKN Members involved: IISD, ENDA-Energie
This project sought to enhance the negotiating skills of African delegates in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, to help them participate more effectively in the international negotiations on climate change. The key element of this project was an intensive workshop on negotiating skills which was held in Dakar, Senegal from July 17-22, 2000.
Negotiation Skills Conference - Latin America and the Caribbean

This project sought to enhance the negotiating skills of Latin American and Caribbean delegates in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, to help them participate more effectively in the international negotiations on climate change. An intensive workshop on negotiating skills was held in Miami, Florida from July 24-27, 2000.
